Artist: Ivan Marchuk
Life Status: 1936, Moskalevka (Poland/Ukraine)
About the artist, by Susanna Muradyan & JD:

У к р а ї н с ь к а:

Ivan Marchuk… was born in Moskalevka - in Poland at the time - in the family of a widely known weaver. Young Ivan felt his vocation early on, spending his free time painting. After a thorough study of trends and styles practiced by artists from around the world - with the exception of social realism - he created his own unique style, obviously influenced by his father's trade. He named it “plentanism” (from the Ukrainian verb: plyontaty; to weave, entangle).

The Painters’ Union of the USSR rejected his art for a long time and the KGB kept him under surveillance. Then, over a period of 12 years, Marchuk emigrated to Australia and lived in the USA and Canada. He now resides in Kyiv.
The Daily Telegraph included Marchuk in the Top 100 Living Geniuses in 2007.

Artist: Artem Rogowoi
Life Status: 1988, Kegychivka, Kharkiv region

About the artist, by Susanna Muradyan & JD:

У к р а ї н с ь к а:

Artem Rogowoi… is a well-known Ukrainian artist, an “offspring” of the Kharkiv Art Academy, where he learned two different sets of skills: one to become a painter and the other one for restoring old paintings and icons. The ancient techniques are never far away in his art, as well as his love of gilding. Mastering all those skills let Artem feel free and well “armed” to create artworks of his own. He started his career with rural motifs, rendered in a realistic way, but rapidly incorporating his soon-to-be recognizable footprint. More recently, Artem’s painting has become more decorative, intricate, detailed, and reminiscent of Art Nouveau, with frequent use of gilding touch. But one thing never changed, from his beginnings until now, women have remained his favorite leitmotif.

F r a n ç a i s
